Where do I need the Hungarian vignette?

The notable difference between Hungary and other countries is that most public stretches require the Hungarian vignette, as opposed to only a few toll areas in other countries.

However, there are some exceptions and routes exempt from paying the Hungarian vignette, namely:

  1. The M31 and M8 motorways are completely exempt from paying the vignette.
  2. Some sections of the M0 expressway are also exempt from tolls. These include:
    • The stretch between the main road number 1 and the M5 motorway.
    • The section between the M4 expressway and the M3 motorway.
    • Megyeri Bridge.
  3. Two bypass sections are also free of charge. These include:
    • South-west Pécs section for the M60 motorway.
    • The Kaposvár section for the M9 expressway.
  4. There are two expressways that have well-established toll-free sections. These are:
    • The M9 expressway between the number 6 and number 51 trunk roads.
    • The M4 expressway between Vecsés and the road leading to Liszt Ferenc Budapest International Airport.

In general, most public sections in Hungary require the purchase of e vignette Hungary in order to drive legally and without problems on toll roads. However, there are these exceptions that can benefit drivers traveling on specific routes.

Toll device Hungarian vignette

For trucks, you must use the OBU machine, called HU-GO, to pay the Hungarian vignette.

The OBU device can be loaded with credit in the Pre-pay system from over 500 gas stations operated by companies such as OMV or MOL.

An important advantage is that the OBU adapts to your route, automatically calculating the tolls regardless of the route you choose or if you change it during the trip. This makes travel easier by eliminating the need to purchase fixed-route tickets.
