Autovías in Spain are accessible free of charge and are recognized by the designation with “A” followed by a number (eg A7).

However, a disadvantage is that these highways are often congested at the entrances and exits.

Autopistat motorways in Spain are tolled according to the vehicle category and are identified by the designation with “AP” followed by a number (eg AP7).

These highways are often joined by Autovías, but offer much freer and faster traffic.

How do I pay Spain highway tolls?

The Spain highway tolls (Spain vignette) is paid manually. Upon entering the highway you will receive a ticket, and at the end of the journey on that highway section, you will pay the appropriate toll.

It is important to note that some motorways in Spain apply tolls according to the vehicle category and the distance traveled on the motorway, while others have fixed tolls determined only by the vehicle category, regardless of the number of kilometers driven on the motorway.

Payment can be made both in cash and by bank card.

Spain highway tolls

There is a convenient option for truck and car drivers who travel frequently in Spain, namely the VIA-T automatic toll system.

This system allows vehicles to pass through the toll booths without having to stop or wait, which is a big advantage, especially during busy periods. By means of the VIA-T Box device, installed in the vehicle, entries and exits from the highway are automatically recorded.

However, it is important to note that the use of the VIA-T device involves the payment of additional charges over the regular motorway tolls. However, many drivers believe that this additional cost is justified due to the advantages offered by the VIA-T automatic tolling system.

You can find more information about the VIA-T device here.
